In the
Beginning:
In
February 1981, the
little 80-member Highland Park Church of Christ began a ministry to
assist Cambodian refugees
under the direction of pastor Pat Brooks. Pat Brooks and his wife,
Kathleen, assist refugees by
offer friendship, food, clothing, transportation, job
search, and learning the English language.
In 1984,
Pat
Brooks, an advocate of applied
Biblical theology, became the full time minister of Cambodian
congregation. Under his leadership it grew into a unique community of
faith. The original Cambodian refugees included the families of Sokhom Hun, Kim You Thlang and Sophanna Kim.
These families still an integrate part of our Cambodian Church of Christ.
Our
Sponsors:
In the summer of
1985, the ministry moved to the Peak and Eastside Church of Christ
in the heart of Old East Dallas. We worshiped in a room above the
foyer in the church building.
In
1987, the elders of the Peak and Eastside and
the Lake Highlands Church of Christ made an arrangement to move
the Cambodian congregation to Lake Highlands Church.
It was at this
time that an evangelistic meeting was held with
Brother Moses Samol Seth of Stockton, California. Moses, a gifted
and experienced Cambodian evangelists, urged all Cambodian
Christians to become united in one Body of Christ.
Brother Sokhom
Hun invited Cambodian
Families from many different
Christians backgrounds such as Sovanna Tim and his family from Eastwood
Christian Church; Van Lor and his family from Mesquite
Baptist Church; Kim Chea So and his family from First Methodist
Church in Carrollton and others from Cambodian Alliance
Church in Dallas to worship as a Cambodian Church.
In 1989,
with the assistance from the Lake Highlands Church of Christ, the property
at Lake June Road was acquired to establish the Cambodian Church of
Christ.
